What is the framework for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) for members of the Florida Bar? Every three years, each Florida attorney completes 33 hours of CLE training.
Five required hours must be in approved ethics or professionalism courses or the elimination of bias in the practice of law, substance abuse, or mental illness information. Three must be in technological proficiency. Attorneys must devote at least one of the hours to the topic of professionalism.
Florida lawyers are free to take courses relevant to their practices and areas of interest to fill out the remaining hours. A credit hour comprises approximately 50 minutes.
Newly admitted attorneys have special requirements, as outlined here by the American Bar Association.
Florida’s Continuing Legal Education requirement has been in place since 1988 when the state Supreme Court adopted it. The CLE requirement ensures that every attorney admitted to the Florida Bar undertakes continued legal and professional education.
As in other areas of licensed professionalism, this requirement assures the public that lawyers keep up with the latest in knowledge and compliance. This increases the credibility, prestige, and value of the legal profession. Its importance cannot be overstated in a time when artificial intelligence and legal self-help corporations challenge the domain from multiple vectors.
CLEs also create networking opportunities for attorneys. And that’s a pivotal reason to appreciate it. It’s about knowledge, but it’s also about people and the mutual benefits reaped through professional connections.
The Florida no-fault insurance law requires vehicle owners to carry $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Regardless of which party is at fault in a road accident, this coverage pays for the medical treatment of injuries.
After or during the time they treat injured patients, hospitals and providers often need legal assistance in:
An attorney's assistance represents an essential public service. Thus, the attorneys who work in this area charge their medical clients nothing. Under Florida law, the insurance companies must pay attorneys’ fees for recovery of the costs of treatment.
